We were successful in engaging Djongology who gave a sell-out concert for us in Loughborough in 2008 and also local musician Okus Milsom as a support act.

Everything is themed to Tilden Project Nepal:

The date – 30th October – would have been Tilden’s 45th birthday.

The title of the concert ‘Top of the World’ (used for all our events) links the geographical background of the project with the last music compilation put together by Tilden, titled ‘Top of the World’.

Djongology play in the style of Stephane Grappelly/Django Rheinhardt – music Tilden loved.

Okus Milsom – support act – as a small boy was close to Tilden.

Samapatti Neeraj was a family friend and Tilden loved her paintings.

DJONGOLOGY

A fabulous group of musicians who will bring us a wide variety of music, featuring Richard Smith as classical guitarist whose skilled and sensitive play leaves you almost holding your breath ; also young Ben Holder on the violin – formerly at the Birmingham Conservatoire, he has already established a reputation as a jazz violinist known for his wild improvisations.

SUPPORT ACT – OKUS MILSOM

Okus is a young local self taught singer songwriter influenced by The Libertines and Jamie T but educated by Dylan, Neil Young and Paul Weller. He will introduce you to his own brand of Indi Acoustic folk which was such a favourite at Little Bytham Music Festival last year.

TOP OF THE WORLD EXHIBITION

The Ill-Fitting Clothes of the World

This was also a retrospective exhibition of paintings and work by Samapatti Neeraj (earlier known as Wendy Hall) running all day (11:00 – 22:30) in the Corn Exchange complex – entry by donation. She was a talented painter/illustrator and a friend of the family. Sadly she died last year at the age of 60 having suffered from Parkinsons Disease for some years.
Her work ranges from dark mysterious pictures to light humorous works. She always has a powerful message and a story to tell. Much of the work on show will be on loan from people who loved her work in her lifetime. It was her dearest wish to use her work to support Tilden Project Nepal. We hope to have prints, posters and cards on sale as well as some her most recent unsold paintings.

VENUE:

The Corn Exchange Theatre Stamford is a 400 seat theatre built within the shell of the original Corn Exchange Hall – refurbished and run by volunteers. The theatre is on Broad Street in the centre of Stamford, for details see http://www.stamford-corn-exchange.co.uk.

Donations

We are indebted to those Trusts, organisations and individuals who have sent substantial donations in 2009.
Special thanks to our supporters who make regular monthly donations, these enable us to be confident of meeting our salary commitments.

Work continues with the smokeless stove scheme, provision of clean water supplies to schools, funeral shelters and pre-school nurseries. We have requests for provision of new nurseries and have just completed a new building at Buddha School.

TPN also now employs a librarian who we hope will help us extend our initial provision of books more widely in the community. The committee in Aruchour have been exploring extension of the goat scheme, chicken farming and a longer term project of tree planting. We will have more details after Jan’s 2010 trip.

The Trustees Of Tilden Project Nepal very much appreciate your continued encouragement and support.

In June 2009, Lesley and David Jebson hosted a 2 day event for Tilden Project Nepal at their home in Rempstone, near Loughborough. Trustee Anthony Revell designed and built a range of garden sculpture exhibits which were displayed throughout their garden, orchard and adjoining field.

We had Nepalese crafts, plants and homemade jam on sale. There were ploughman’s lunches, hot dogs, homemade cakes etc. on sale in the refreshment area and, of course, a raffle. Amongst a range of prizes, one lucky winner took home a piece of garden sculpture, another won a weekend in Filey.

We are grateful to the many people who turned out to see the show and also to those who came to help. There are not sufficient words to convey our gratitude to David and Lesley who worked tirelessly to put on this fundraiser for us. Thanks to their efforts we raised £2,500 for our work in Aruchour.

Jazz Concert by Djangology – Loughborough November 2008

Our major fundraising event for 2008 was a Top Of The World Jazz Concert.

In November 2008, Djangology captured the attention and enthusiasm of a large audience at Trinity Methodist Church, Loughborough with a stunning programme of jazz inspired by the Quintette of the Hot Club of Paris. Richard Smith also gave us some inspired classical solos. It was a wet, stormy night outside but every member of the audience must have been glad they make the effort to turn out – none of us wanted the music to stop. It was a truly memorable evening. We launched our new calendar for 2009, introduced our range of greetings cards and raised £1600 for the work in Aruchour.

We are grateful to Trinity Church for providing the venue, for the Church members who came along to provide technical support and serve refreshments – and, of course, a huge thanks to Djangology.

Ben Holder - Violin, John Smith - Guitar, Steve Peters - Bass, Richard Smith - Guitar

Ben Holder, whose wild style and brilliant improvisations had thrilled the jazz fans in the audience, draws the first winning ticket for the raffle from Sophie Revell (Sec.)

In April 2008, our chairperson Jan Revell went out to Aruchour again. This time she took with her Pete Bird, a photographer. Pete, seen below being greeted and honoured by the children at Sarbodoya School, is a supporter of Tilden Project Nepal and wanted to help us achieve a wide range of photographs of the work we are doing in Nepal.
We are very grateful to him and many of the new photographs on the website were taken by him this year, further examples of his work are on his own website at www.highkeyimage.co.uk

This year we are about to branch out a little by providing goats to families who are exceptionally poor.

There are many families without any employment, they usually have a little land so they can grow their own food, but no money coming in. To purchase a goat costs £20; with a goat they are able to produce a range of milk, yoghurt, cheese etc and this enables them to improve their standard of living.

The committee in Aruchour are currently exploring ways of introducing a viable scheme.

In April 2008 Tilden Project Nepal is to open a new nursery in Aruchour, based on a specific request from the TPN Committee in the village. The new nursery will be in Ward 9 of the village and situated at Buddha School which is a predominantly lower-caste school.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Oundle Rotary Club, we have been able to fund the essential building work, prepare and equip a playground, complete the interior of a newly built room and provide basic toys etc.

The new nursery will be called The Andrew Nursery in memory of Andrew Pemberton who was tragically killed in a car accident in January 2008. The Pemberton family are supporters of Tilden Project Nepal.
